Technical Costuming - Tailoring

Fall 2023 ~ James Madison University ~ Advisor: Kathleen Conery

I chose to take an independent study to substitute a technical costuming class that was not being offered my senior year. Throughout the semester we worked primarily on tailoring, with the overarching project being a fully tailored jacket. I chose to use a 1930’s inspired double-breasted jacket pattern.

My advisor and I started the process by going over some foundational tailoring techniques (pictured below).

Bound Pocket with Flap Sample

Lapel Structure Sample

My first major task after cutting out the pattern pieces was the pad-stitching structure in the lapel of the jacket.

Then, I worked on preparing and stitching the lining of the jacket.

Next, I installed the pockets.

Then, I installed the bound buttonholes for the front closures. (I love a good double-breasted jacket, but of course that means double the buttonholes!)

Next, I mounted the sleeves. (I did have to go back and fix the sleeves later, but here is the original mount).

Next, I attached the collar.

Finally, I fully connected the lining to the main body fabric and added the finishing touches. (More pictures to come!)
